Matt Mccormick

Matt McCormick (b. 1987) is a multimedia artist, whose artwork assimilates a diversity of cultural influences culled from the American West into an artistic vision that is as unique and dynamic as the topography itself. Within McCormick’s body of work, seemingly incompatible elements cohabitate with ease—reflecting the conflicting histories of California, McCormick’s home state. The artist embraces these gritty aspects as equally formative to the Golden State as the homestead towns, gold rush bonanzas and 1920s Hollywood glamour that captivate our popular imagination. McCormick’s art embodies the true spirit of America, but also the human condition, replete with renegades, risk takers and outlaws. Follow on Instagram: @mattmccormick.

What were some of the things growing up that inspired you to be an artist?

I was raised by two working artist parents who impressed upon me the immense importance of the arts on culture and society as a whole. My earliest memories are of being in their shared studio, playing in my moms dark room, crawling around my dads painting studio, music blasting. Not unlike what I find myself doing these days.

A lot of your artwork has a western aesthetic to it, where did this direction come from?

The American West and the cowboy figure specifically has been a defining feature of American culture in so many ways from the western movies of the early to mid 20th century, rock and country music of the last 100 years, Marlboro ads, and many more ways, the effect on the artistic landscape has been immense. Making work that speaks to what I know feels like the most honest way to connect with the viewer. This subject in particular has weaved its way through so many different facets of my life that it started and continued relatively subconsciously.

Where did you first learn about Stance, and what made you agree to work with them?

Stance has a great history of working with creatives and other people pushing the boundaries in their respective fields. I am always trying to find new ways and mediums to present my work and expand my reach. I believe there is no one right way to make art and working with Stance created a new outlet for my practice.

Where can people find out more about your artwork, and new paintings?

The most up to date place that I present work is through my own channels, instagram (@mattmccormick), my website (www.mattrmccormick.com), self published books, etc...

What is next for Matt McCormick in 2021?

I am currently working on a new body of work that I am very excited for to present in my studios gallery space and online. I have some exciting projects that will be announced shortly through my instagram and One of These Days will really be pushing the boundaries on what we have done historically in the clothing space.
